The Homerun Readers program is on hold for 2020, due to COVID-19. Please keep on reading and we will continue our program in 2021!!

Homerun Readers provides a fun and rewarding program to Kindergarten through Fifth Grade students in the Greater Clinton, Iowa area, promoting incentives for summertime reading by the students.

This is being offered as an effort to reduce summer declines in reading skills for area youth and help with improved student reading skills overall. The objective for the student participant is to read 25 minutes in daily increments to accumulate 1000 minutes over the course of the summer. Tied to the baseball theme of the program, the reading goals are divided further into 4 bases, (or 250 minutes sub-sections) to provide rewards along the path.

Our goal is for the Homerun Readers program to decrease the “Summer Learning Loss” – on average, students’ achievement scores decline over summer vacation by one month’s worth of school-year learning. This is increased if the student is lower-income, as studies have found that the flow of resources slows for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
